Phakic IOL
Phakic IOLs (Intraocular Lenses)
Another option for correction of nearsightedness is done through Phakic Intraocular lens implantation. It is a new procedure for people desiring permanent correction of common vision errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) to help reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses. Phakic lens implanted eye keeps its natural (Crystalline) lens in tact. It is made of plastic if silicone. During the implantation surgery, a small incision is made in the front of the eye, then the plastic lens is inserted through the incision and placed right in front of or just behind the iris. There are 2 Phakic IOLs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA), i.e., Verisyse and Vision ICL. Presently, both are approved for nearsightedness treatments only, and the procedure is similar to cataract surgery. As for the farsightedness and astigmatism, potential approval is continued to be clinically tested and trialed.
The verisyse ICL, implanted in fron of the iris, is attached (enclavated) to the peripheral iris while the verisian ICL is placed behibd the iris but in front of the natural lens of the eye. This makes the difference that verisyse implanted lens comes to contact with the moving structures within the eye, but the verisian does not., due to their placements. However, for both, given that the natural lens of the eye is not removed, the patient retains the natural focusing capability of the eye for near focusing functions. Like any other eye surgeries, the patient will be instructed for preparation before undergoing the operation as well as post-operation regimens.
