Arm Lift
Arm lift (Brachioplasty)
Arm tissue relaxes with age, gravity and weight loss. The drooping of skin is from a stretching of the anchoring system of the arm and loss of supporting fat. Patients are very unhappy with this “loose hammock” appearance.
An Arm lift (Brachioplasty) usually involves an incision along two areas: the armpit and the inside surface of the arm from the elbow to the armpit, in an inconspicuous location. Excess fat is removed through liposuction. The excessive skin is trimmed away, pulled together and sutured in place.
Drainage tubes may be inserted that will require personal home care for up to one week. Dressings will be applied to the incision areas. A compression garment may be required for several weeks after surgery.
Brachioplasty (Arm Reduction Surgery) can remove excess tissue and reduce the circumference of the upper arm. Surgical correction depends on the amount of extra skin and how loose the supporting tissues have become. Extra skin is removed from incisions along the inner arm. The incision must be placed where the tissue can be best tightened but the incision must be well hidden as well.
This operation is done to tighten the loose skin of the upper arm, smetimes called a bat wing deformity. It does not change the texture of the skin but by stretching it, the crepiness is made less noticeable. Sometimes the skin of the hand is also tightened or resurfaced. In selected cases ultrasonic liposuction alone may be adequate because it removes excess fat and may cause slight tightening.
The method of surgery is not complicated; the excess skin is marked and then removed. In some patients the fascia or deep layer is held in place with special stitches attached to the fascia of the arm pit or axilla. The incision is placed on the inner and under surface of the arm and often curves or zigzags. It may also curve around the upper part of the arm. Often some fat is suctioned at the same time. The operation is done under either local anesthetic (you are awake) or general anesthetic (you are asleep). You can choose but most patients are happier asleep. Most of the time this is an outpatient operation and a stay in the hospital is not needed.
